A water colour painting of the former Dunedin Stock Exchange building, with electric trams in the streets, in a 1950s scene. The painting is one of 15 by Don McAra in a forthcoming exhibition at the Otago Art Society's gallery in the Dunedin Railway Station from March 13 until the end of the month.
A "Heritage matters" exhibition in Dunedin by Christchurch artist Don McAra will feature 15 water colour and oil paintings of Dunedin tramway and cable car scenes from the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s.

The exhibition is McAra's second of cable car and tramway-related paintings. His first exhibition of more than 30 paintings in July 2007 coincided with the launch of his book on cable cars, Hold very tight please.

The "Heritage matters" exhibition will run from March 13 until the end of the month at the Otago Art Society gallery, upstairs at the Dunedin Railway Station.

The exhibition comes at a time of increased interest in the history of Dunedin cable cars, which ran on five routes between 1881 and 1957. The recently opened $3.1 million Maryhill Presbyterian Church and Community Centre has arranged for cable-car murals to be painted on one of the exterior walls of the centre.
