The world is your oyster when you win Lotto.
At least, it was for Mosgiel's newest millionaires when their numbers came up last Saturday.
The middle-aged couple, who wish to remain anonymous, celebrated their $1 million win by splashing out on two dozen oysters.
"They bought a luxury treat of two dozen oysters and some fine wine and beer," New Zealand Lotteries communications head Karen Jones said yesterday.
"They are regular Lotto players, who have been using the same numbers since Lotto started, in 1987.
"They are like most Kiwis; working and with a mortgage. They plan to still keep working."
The couple, who have two teenage boys, bought their winning ticket from Mosgiel New World.
"We have won third division and even a second division over the years, but it is unbelievable that we have finally won first division. We are so excited," the man said.
"My wife walked past the New World and saw their sign up saying they had sold a big winner and thought, 'How nice'.
When she got around to checking our ticket and realised we had won the million it was an 'Oh my God' moment," he said.
"We can now be mortgage-free this year and are already starting planning some travel for next year. It's really the icing on the cake for us."
Mosgiel New World owner Jack Stafford said the couple, who were well-known locally, were popular winners.
"They were very excited when they came in with the ticket. They were still in a slight state of shock," he said yesterday.
"They're local people who have been coming here for a long time.
"They're a lovely couple.
"They're very down-to-earth, everyday people and we're really, really happy for them."
Ms Jones said the $1 million would be transferred into the couple's bank account today.
