Oxford St traffic triggers safety fears

Reckless drivers have discovered a dangerous shortcut in South Dunedin and a local man believes it is only a matter of time before someone gets hurt.

Oxford St resident Willie Leishman said drivers had been using the one-way street as a way to bypass the lights at the intersection of Prince Albert St and Bay View Rd over the past few months.

‘‘Irresponsible’’ drivers were going too fast down the street, ignoring potential hazards.

‘‘Somebody is going to get killed or badly injured’’

Oxford St had few streetlights and visibility was not good.

He was concerned somebody would hit a young child, as the street had a playground at Navy Park, as well as Little Citizens Early Learning Centre.

Mr Leishman was also worried about elderly people who lived at the Oxford Court Lifecare rest home.

He wanted to see something done about the driving, such as a lower speed limit or speed bumps.

He had contacted the Dunedin City Council about the issue several times, he said.

A council spokesman said the DCC occasionally received complaints regarding vehicle speeds on Oxford St.

Most drivers drove appropriately in the area and there were no plans to install traffic calming measures, but it would continue to monitor the situation.

Any improvements would need to be considered against other spending priorities, he said.

I was nearly run down by a guy short-cutting the lights through the Caversham Night 'n Day carpark. I caught up to him at the Lookout Point lights and gave him a few words he didn't like. He chased me down the motorway and around the Oval. It was funny as hell watching the loser road rage - it actually cheered me up. So many inconsiderate drivers in Dunedin who can't really drive, don't know the rules and don't care. On a bike you take your life in your hands cycle lane or no.

Lets take a step back and look at why this could possibly be happening.
Maybe people want to get from a to b the quickest route - lets go with that.
So why are people taking these short cuts
Could it be they are sick of the DCC introducing all the barriers to the roads to slow traffic
the slow sequencing of the lights and yet nobody has ever been able to answer the question of did they sync the lights when NZ changed the give-away rules, I suspect not.

So let Dunedin's people take this back to the Awesome Town planners Dunedin has the same ones who let the crap Cycle ways be accepted.

Time to wake up Dunedin the council doesn't give a rats about what people like or hate so long as they progress the No Cars, No parking and make it as hard as possible for people
