The Otago University Students' Association has revealed plans to spend more than $2 million renovating its Recreation Centre and main office on campus.
The plan would use $1.748 million to upgrade OUSA's Recreation Centre, formerly known as the Clubs and Societies Centre, and $294,101 for improving its main office.
The plan to upgrade the Recreation Centre comes after OUSA asked students what they wanted to see in the centre.
Key features of the proposed upgrade include building a new entranceway, a cinema space, more meeting space and improving toilet facilities, heating and ventilation.
Spending on the centre would be funded by the sale of the OUSA's interest in Unipol and the sale of the Mojo's Hall, which brought in about $900,000 and was earmarked for recreation asset purposes.
OUSA president-elect Francisco Hernandez said the upgrade would bring the OUSA Recreation Centre into the 21st century.
"It will improve student usage and student satisfaction, which is really important."
He hoped the increase in usage seen after Otago University upgraded Unipol would be mirrored at the centre.
The changes to the main office building would mean the University Book Shop, which is owned by OUSA, will open a second shop on campus, taking up space freed up by reorganising OUSA's offices.
OUSA general manager Darel Hall said having a second University Book Shop outlet on campus was about increasing income generation and trying to make the organisation less reliant on funding from the university.
OUSA planned to have the second book shop opened in time for when students returned next year.
Renovations at the recreation centre would begin over the Christmas break with toilet refurbishments.
Construction of a new entry would start next June, with the remainder of work to be completed over the 2013 year Christmas break.
