Opoho School in Dunedin fittingly marked 75 years to the day since it was formed by having two of its oldest first-day pupils cut a cake with the newest member of the school.

Former pupils and staff from as far afield as Australia and Niue attended the jubilee to relive old memories of their time at the school. Organising committee member and former pupil Ruth Thomson was very happy with the turnout of 150, along with about 50 partners.

Among events held to mark the jubilee were an assembly on Friday where past pupils met present pupils and were shown around the school, the cake cutting on Saturday and a church service and barbecue yesterday, Ms Thomson said.

First-day pupil Roy Quennell said a lot had changed since he attended the school - including the addition of extra classrooms.

He did not remember the school's first day, but had fond memories of the excitement among pupils while the school was being built.

Principal Jenny Clarke said the jubilee helped build upon what was already a strong sense of community spirit.
