Clutha-Taieri area response manager Senior Sergeant Al Dickie shared stories about those being recognised at the ceremony before about 20 friends, family and police colleagues.
One of them, Senior Constable Jason Braid, of Mosgiel, was given an award for 14 years of service, Snr Sgt Dickie citing his help in saving a woman at ''death's door'' and his work in a mortuary after a plane crash.
Sergeant Kevin Davidson, of Mosgiel, was recognised for 35 years' service after beginning ''on the beat'' in Dunedin in 1979.
Sgt Davidson was ''sympathetic and compassionate'' and ''like a father figure to younger cops''.
''Kevin has provided an excellent service for 35 years in a well-balanced career,'' Snr Sgt Dickie said.
Retired Mosgiel Police Station receptionist Margaret Miller was recognised for her 28 years' service.
''We thank Margaret for the service she put in and the stability she gave the station,'' Snr Sgt Dickie said.
The 42 years' service of Sergeant Warren Kemp, the officer in charge of Dunedin International Airport, was recognised and Snr Sgt Dickie read letters of thanks from the families of people Sgt Kemp had helped.
Constable Tim Coudret, of Mosgiel, was recognised for his police work in Christchurch after the 2011 earthquake.
''The city was certainly devastated and the local police appreciated the support,'' Snr Sgt Dickie said.
Dunedin Clutha Waitaki area commander Inspector Jason Guthrie presented the awards.
