Most days, Lindsay Wright journeys from Kaitangata to Balclutha.

Now, he can see the world.

Mr Wright, who won the Otago Daily Times online No Matter Where in the World competition yesterday, has chosen to venture across the ditch.

The 79-year-old part-time bus driver, from Kaitangata, won the first and only prize in the competition - to go anywhere in the world to the value of $10,000 - and decided to visit family in Melbourne.

That was far enough for the retired Finegand freezing worker and wife June, who is recovering from a hip operation.

The competition was launched to celebrate the relaunch of the Allied Press website odt.co.nz.

Mr Wright said he tried to see his two grandchildren in Melbourne as often as possible and winning the competition was a great surprise - and a bonus.

He knew nothing of the win until informed yesterday while polishing his bus outside Balclutha Primary School.

"It hasn't really sunk in yet. It's pretty hard to believe."

He had won little of note in the past.

Mr Wright drives a school bus from Kaitangata and Wangaloa to Balclutha most days and was a member of the Kaitangata Volunteer Fire Brigade for 42 years.

About 6000 entries were received for the competition, with about half entered via the website.

The draw was made by Inspector Alastair Dickie, of Dunedin police.
