Several thousand Carisbrook plastic seats could harbour sports fans again.

North Harbour Stadium staff flew to Dunedin yesterday to check out the plastic seats removed from Carisbrook for a Rotary Club fundraising project.

About 8500 seats have been stored at the former Cottonsoft toilet paper factory in Fryatt St.

North Harbour Stadium venue manager Brian Doherty said the seats' availability was serendipitous.

The Albany stadium had 20,000 seats and two grass embankments. Stadium staff were contemplating the installation of another 5000 seats on the embankments to build the capacity to 25,000 seats.

The stadium needed extra seating for the Junior Rugby World Championship next year and the FIFA under-20 World Cup in 2015.

Temporary seating was used for the 2011 Rugby World Cup, he said.

The blue Carisbrook seats would complement the teal-coloured seating at the stadium, he said.

Stadium architect Barry Copeland said the trip yesterday was to determine the feasibility of transporting and installing 15-year-old seats.

The stadium was considering buying between 6000 and 7000 seats,The ''quality, colour diversity and condition'' were purchase considerations, he said.
