In 2006, the OUSA executive granted the Otago University Rowing Club $40,002 towards construction of a large boat storage shed, changing rooms and toilet at Henley, where rowers practise when conditions are unfavourable on Otago Harbour.
The club asked the executive to set aside a further $20,000 in its 2009 budget, but the request was declined last week.
OUSA president Simon Wilson said yesterday the executive felt the association had already contributed enough to a club catering for a relatively small number of students.
OUSA had already largely funded the $1.4 million aquatic centre built at the Boat Harbour Reserve in 2002 for use by the rowing club and others.
Rowing club chief executive Glenn Sinclair said yesterday he was disappointed with the decision.
"It will make it difficult for us to get matching funding from organisations such as the Community Trust [of Otago] and Pub Charities. It will possibly push the completion of the project out six months or more."
Resource consent had already been granted for a 6m x 24m shed, and a lease was being signed with the landowner.
The club had hoped to have the facility completed by March, but that would not be possible.
However, Mr Sinclair said the shed would still be built.
"Never say never. It will definitely happen, even if it takes a bit longer than we wanted."
The club had about 200 members from beginners through to advanced, he said.
Its rowers had earned national and international honours, such as the women's lightweight double which had reached the finals at the recent University World Rowing Championships in Serbia (formerly Yugoslavia).
