An underground art exhibition inspired by the Otago Daily Times opened in Dunedin this week.

Dunedin School of Art sculpture student Daniel Roberts spent 60 days compiling ''And now the news'' by scanning the newspaper daily for news items which he then reinterpreted as sculptures.

''Each work was made in a day in response to an article from the ODT from that particular day,'' he said yesterday.

''I wanted to use the local newspaper to source current articles and the ODT has been a major part of this work.

''Every day, I read articles and tried to find materials I could work with. For example, there was a news brief about someone throwing a rock through a car window in Vogel St.

''So, I found a shattered windscreen and folded it into the shape of a rock and turned glass into rock.''

Roberts (29) has included 50 of the ODT-inspired artworks in the exhibition.

''The show is a response to local and international politics, through the observation of daily current affairs. I'm trying to engage the viewer in a conversation about politics, in a light-hearted way,'' he said.

''The whole reason was to work in the opposite way to how I usually work; where form dictates everything. This has got rid of form and concentrated on materials and concept.''

''And now the news'' is on at the George St underground market, opposite Farmers, until 5.30pm today.
