There is going to be even more reason to head to school in Waikouaiti now.

The school has had a new bike pump track installed and also has the added bonus of a large artificial playing surface coming with it.

Waikouaiti School was chosen by the Dunedin City Council parks and reserves department to be the location for the latest pump track.

Waikouaiti School principal Mark Edwards said the school community was thrilled the school got to receive the track.

Pump tracks are suitable for bikes, skateboards and scooters.

The council contributed about $100,000 from budgeted funds and Waikouaiti School raised about $80,000 with funds coming from many different groups.

Mr Edwards said the school grounds were always popular with children and the bike track would only add to that popularity.

"Our children are very active and have been so excited to see the contractors install the artificial turf surface and finally the pump track over the last few weeks and are now looking forward to using it with bikes, scooters and probably their feet," Mr Edwards said.

With the council offering the bike track and the possibility with input from the school, to get the artificial turf, it was a no-brainer to go ahead with the project, he said.

The artificial turf would be a real bonus in winter as the grounds got wet and the pupils struggled to find a suitable patch of ground to play on.
