A post box to replace one damaged beyond repair in Caversham, Dunedin, has been delivered in time for postal voting in local body elections.

A post box in South Rd was damaged weeks ago and its replacement arrived after feedback flowed in to New Zealand Post from the Caversham community.

Dunedin Mayor Aaron Hawkins had also weighed in.

"It’s good to see New Zealand Post respond to the community’s push to have the post box replaced, but it’s disappointing that it was even a question," Mr Hawkins said after the replacement box was installed this week.

It is understood the previous post box was hit by a vehicle.

New Zealand Post had told the Otago Daily Times the company was assessing options, but then a replacement for the damaged box turned up.

"In reviewing any of our points of service, including street post boxes, we are always conscious of the part our network plays in the community and in important events such as local body elections," New Zealand Post South Island regional manager James Purdie said.

"In this case we became aware of the mayor’s feedback whilst in the process of confirming a replacement option for the damaged box.

"We are pleased to have been able to find a practical solution for the replacement and at the current time we have no further plans regarding this location."

Postal voting in local body elections starts in September.
