When the new Mosgiel Pool opens in 2023, representation of a taniwha is set to be there in some form.

Included among the details of a progress report for today’s Dunedin City Council’s infrastructure services committee meeting was a comment that pre-cast vertical panels presented a large part of the visual cultural narrative for the facility.

Triangles depicted a taniwha’s teeth, the council disclosed.

The pool’s construction team has been working with consultancy Aukaha on opportunities to weave cultural elements into the design and look of the building.

Recent notable activities for the pool construction include excavation for the water spaces and erection of a portion of the steel portal frame, councillors have been advised.

Installation of the roof is "not too far away".

A design has been confirmed with Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency for the Gordon Rd entranceway and intersection with Eden St.

Traffic lights are to be installed there and are expected to start operating in early 2023.

The aquatic facility is due to open in May 2023. It is budgeted to cost about $21.3 million.
