One new Kiwi is already planning how she can give back to the community after a citizenship ceremony was held yesterday afternoon at the Dunedin Centre.

Sahitya Anand, formerly of India, has lived in New Zealand for seven years, and moved to Dunedin from Auckland four months ago.

She came to the country for work in the IT industry, but made the move south to study towards a master’s in business.

She said she wanted to ‘‘give back to the country’’, and had plans to start a non-profit to support women experiencing emotional distress once she had completed her studies.

Thirty-seven new citizens were sworn in at yesterday’s ceremony, which was presided over by Dunedin deputy mayor Christine Garey.

New citizens were given a book and a kowhai shrub when they received their citizenship certificates.
