Neighbour helps woman fend off swarming wasps

A swarm of wasps attacked a woman in Belleknowes yesterday afternoon, getting tangled in her hair and stinging her as she struggled to get rid of them.

Beaumont Rd neighbour Phil Grant rushed to the woman's aid after he heard her screams and said they were all over her.

"When I first saw her, they were swarming around her,'' Mr Grant said.

"She was screaming because they were on her hair and on her trousers. She must have given them a bit of a rark-up.''

The woman, aged in her 50s, had been in her garden and disturbed them, Mr Grant said.

He was unsure how many wasps there were or how many stings the woman received.

"I was pulling them off her. She got a few stings ... [but] she was glad to see me, for sure.''

Mr Grant said he had been to check on her after her release from Dunedin Hospital last night and said she was "OK''.
