Tea and sultana cake sustained up to 200 quilting enthusiasts from throughout the lower South Island as they gathered to chat, admire work and buy supplies in Dunedin on Saturday.

Quilters and Patchworkers of Otago held its biennial country day at the Mornington Presbyterian Church, to which more than 100 men and women travelled from outside the city.

President Jennifer Knox, of Dunedin, said most of the group's 111 members also attended the event, which was held ''every other year'' to the club's exhibition.

The country day was a chance for quilters and patchworkers to connect, she said.

''It's about people from little country groups to bigger groups like ours all coming together, having a shopping frenzy, a good catch-up and some morning or afternoon tea. There is great camaraderie.''

Quilting merchants from Dunedin, Oamaru, Wanaka, Arrowtown and Gore attended with fabric, patterns, thread and other goods for sale.

Ohope quilt artist and tutor Mary Transom spoke at the country day and was also running workshops, Mrs Knox said.
