A total of 470 Dunedin primary school pupils took part in a safari-themed sports event for 5 to 7-year-olds at Forsyth Barr Stadium yesterday.
Sport Otago Community and School adviser Emma Maxwell said the event allowed the children to burn off "extra energy''.
"Getting kids exercising is always going to be a fun thing.''
Year 12 pupils from Otago Boys' High School staffed seven rotation stations which challenged the children's stability, locomotor and manipulative motor skills, she said.
"Fundamental movement skills are the building blocks for movement.
"They are the skills in which children need to participate successfully in all types of games, physical activities, and sports.''
Sport Otago will run two more challenge days for Dunedin primary schools this year.
