Move to charge for filming on public land

Dunedin may soon join other cities in charging companies for filming on public land, if a new policy on the issue is approved.

The Dunedin City Council yesterday voted to take a policy to public consultation that would charge up to $500 a day for filming.

The policy was based on the Wellington City Council's policy, with some minor changes for ease of administration, and to align with Queenstown.

In November last year, the finance, strategy and development committee proposed a policy, and business development adviser Ross Grey yesterday brought one for consideration.

Mr Grey's report said there would be discretion to waive fees for small-scale commercial films to help encourage local film-making, and revenue from larger films could go back to local film promotion and development.

He told the committee he planned consultation with local film industry figures from both smaller and larger companies.

The committee voted for the policy to be sent out for public consultation.
