The Mosgiel Community Foodbank is preparing to ensure no-one goes hungry over Christmas.
Foodbank co-ordinator Michelle Kerr said demand was at a 10-year high earlier this year and Christmas put added stress on struggling families.
"However, the amount being donated has also progressively increased, which shows how generous our community is.''
On Monday, December 5, fire, ambulance and police volunteers will visit every street in Mosgiel to collect non-perishable food.
"Extra treats are also welcome. But the community always looks after our clients really well.''
Every Christmas food parcel would contain a chicken, chocolates and pudding, she said.
A Christmas tree will be set up in the Bank of New Zealand, where gifts can be donated so every child has something to open on Christmas Day.
The Mosgiel food drive had been going for 20 years, but every year was still emotional, Mrs Kerr said.
"It is quite overwhelming to see how generous everyone is. It is not just individuals, but local businesses - everyone gets behind it.''
The December 5 drive will run from 6pm to about 9pm. Residents are encouraged to wait at their letterbox when they heard a siren nearing.
