A bedroom has been graffitied and spray paint and clothing stolen from a house in the Dunedin suburb of Mornington, police say.
The incident happened between 10am and 1.15pm yesterday.
Senior Sergeant Liz Waru, of Dunedin, said an occupant of the house in Durham St was an artist and had spray paint cans in the house.
"The offenders have used the cans to tag a bedroom wall."
Another bedroom was "ransacked''.
Residents had left a window open for a cat to get in the house, Snr Sgt Waru said.
