A woman who was instrumental in creating a park with panoramic views of Dunedin was on hand to help beautify it at the weekend.
Dame Elizabeth Hanan was there with shovel in hand at the Falcon St playground in Highgate on Saturday to plant trees and shrubs.
The initiative involving the Dunedin City Council comes after a macrocarpa which provided shelter, privacy for neighbouring properties and a place for kids to play was cut down, in what Dame Elizabeth called a tragedy.
"The kids ran around in it and built huts in it, but the powers that be decided that they did not like cutting it and trimming it," she said.
Dame Elizabeth, a former Dunedin City councillor, was heavily involved in developing the plan to plant trees at the park, a place she held close to her heart.
She had lived nearby for 50 years and was instrumental in the creation of the park in the 1970s, which came as the land was used during road-widening on Highgate.
The park was notable for its panoramic views of the city, she said.
Other members of the public and staff from Delta were also on hand to help.
