A more diverse police force will result in better outcomes for everyone.

That was the message shared at a police recruitment drive in Dunedin on Wednesday night.

About 40 potential recruits attended the event at the South Dunedin police station to listen to speeches and speak with officers about the career.

Senior Constable Toni Wall said the event coincided with the release of Puhikura, a documentary series about wahine (Maori women) joining the police force and the difficulties they faced.

A wide range of people attended at the event interested in joining, which was great to see, she said.

In her time, she had seen a lot more women in the police both nationally and locally.

She hoped to continue to see diversity grow and see a wider range of ethnicities interested in the future.

By having a diverse police force people would be better able to relate to officers and vice versa.

Regardless of identity, all people interested were encouraged to pursue the career, she said.
