Other lanterns have been installed in the mall, including a giant shell and some stars, in preparation for the upcoming carnival.
Meridian Mall marketing manager Stacey Johnson said the giant lanterns created a warmth and vibrancy throughout the mall, and they were pleased to be able to share them with their customers.
Midwinter Carnival workshop co-ordinator Xanthe Naylor said this year’s carnival would feature a new look, with multiple smaller processions going around the carnival village at First Church.
The lanterns made at the workshop would be the stars of the processions giving everyone their time to shine, Ms Naylor said.
Volunteers to help run the workshops were being sought as the carnival approached.
Workshop assistants were the backbone of the lantern workshops and the role was a great way to get involved in the community, Ms Naylor said.
This year the Midwinter Carnival is being held as a ticketed event with a $5 admission fee, starting on July 8.
