Fire crews took about three hours to put out a vegetation fire near Merton, north of Dunedin, yesterday.

Fire service duty shift manager Brent Dunn said crews were alerted to the fire about 1.55pm and had it under control just after 5pm.

The blaze covered 100sq m and was located between Waikouaiti and Waitati.

Two Waikouaiti fire crews attended the fire, as well as one from Waitati and one from Palmerston.

It was unclear what caused the fire but it was not thought to be suspicious, Mr Dunn said.

He urged people to be vigilant during the summer months as the fire risk increased.

‘‘The biggest advice I have for people who are considering lighting fires is to check with your local councils to see what the regulations are for that area,'' he said.

‘‘There are a lot of prohibited seasons in place and if there aren't, then just use a bit of common sense.''

People were encouraged to check weather forecasts before lighting fires and to mow lawns on cooler days to reduce the risk of sparks causing a fire.

‘‘Our rural crews need a break, too. They're all volunteers and they don't want to be out fighting fires because people are being irresponsible,'' Mr Dunn said.
