The Dunedin City Council has granted consent to the application for a McDonald’s restaurant in the suburb — with conditions.
The Main South Rd site was previously occupied by the Commercial Tavern, which closed in 2021 but had been operating on the site for 150 years.
The council in late November approved a proposal to construct and operate a McDonald’s drive-through on the site.
The plans show the drive-through would operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, although the dine-in part of the restaurant would operate from 7am-11pm, 7 days a week.
The existing buildings would be demolished.
The site would be accessed from Main South Rd and the drive-through would wrap around the western and northern sides of the restaurant building.
There would be 30 carparks, six of them for staff.
The consent approval documents said NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi had been consulted.
No other affected persons forms were submitted with the application.
"No person or party is considered to be adversely affected by the activity," the council said.
"This is because the environmental effects of the proposal are limited to effects on parties that are less than minor ..."
However, the council landscape architect initially expressed concern about the scale and amount of signs and the effects this would have on the amenity of the Green Island centre.
The application was subsequently revised, reducing the height of the free-standing pylon sign from 12m to 7.5m, and removing the flag poles from the proposal entirely.
Concerns were also expressed about potential noise at the site, which would be mitigated by an acoustic barrier.
