Three masked teens who fled the scene of an alleged Outram burglary were busted heading towards Dunedin, police say.

Sergeant Matt Lee, of Dunedin, said police were called to Formby St, Outram, at about 2pm yesterday.

They received a call alleging ‘‘three young people wearing masks’’ had come onto a property in the street and entered a locked garage.

‘‘After they realised they'd been seen, the three left in a vehicle, taking an item from the garage with them,’’ Sgt Lee said.

Police stopped the vehicle in Three Mile Hill Rd.

Behind the wheel was a 17-year-old girl, with two 18-year-old male passengers also in the vehicle.

The two males were arrested and bailed to appear in the Dunedin District Court at a later date, charged with burglary.

The girl was referred to Youth Aid, Sgt Lee said.

Enquiries are also being made into a disqualified driver who fled police in Central Dunedin yesterday.

A white BMW was observed on the roundabout near Anzac Ave at 3.30pm, Sgt Lee said.

‘‘Checks of the vehicle showed the registered owner of the vehicle is a disqualified driver.’’

Police later spotted the vehicle in Dundas St and identified its 27-year-old male owner as the one driving.

The patrol activated their lights and siren and completed a U-turn to stop the vehicle.

But it accelerated, ‘‘speeding away from police’’, Sgt Lee said.

The vehicle was not pursued and enquiries were continuing to find and arrest the driver.

It would be impounded once located, Sgt Lee said.
