Maori health plan worry

Concerns about the lack of a Maori health plan in Otago were raised by Otago District Health Board member Peter Barron this week.

He told the Otago and Southland community and public health advisory committee meeting that although the board had signed a memorandum of understanding with the tangata whenua, it was not complying with the basic requirements of that.

In July, the board agreed to go back to Maori to discuss what had been achieved, explore what could have been done better and agree on a plan for the future.

The Otago board's Maori health manager position has been vacant since July 2007 and no outcome of discussions about a manager position covering both boards has yet been reported.

Committee chairman Errol Millar said he would discuss Mr Barron's concerns with Tahu Potiki (Ngai Tahu), who is a member of both boards, to see how progress could be made.
