Man remanded after crossbow confrontation

A man who allegedly confronted police with a crossbow in Northeast Valley last night has been remanded in custody.

Police were called to a "domestic-related incident" at a house on the corner of Cardigan and Arnold Sts about 7.45pm, Senior Sergeant Chris McLellan said at the scene.

When police arrived, a woman ran from the house.

After a "small disturbance" she was arrested. He did not say what the disturbance was.

A short time later the man, reportedly the occupant's son, presented a crossbow at a female police officer, Snr Sgt McLellan said.

"He came out of the house with a loaded crossbow and confronted the female officer," Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken said later.

The armed offenders squad, a police negotiation team and the dog squad were called out.

Banging and crashing were heard inside the house and police saw the man leaning out the window, yelling and throwing items at them, Snr Sgt McLellan said.

About 8pm, an explosion was heard coming from the house.

The Fire Service was called.

Police negotiated with the man and he was arrested outside the house about 9pm.

Justice of the peace Colin Lind granted the man interim name suppression, when he appeared in the Dunedin District Court this morning, where he was remanded without plea.

He is charged with assaulting a police officer using a crossbow; possessing a crossbow in a manner which suggested it might be used to inflict injury; intentional damage.
