A German student has been fined for urinating in public in central Queenstown, only minutes after police warned him about similar behaviour.
Robin Stachanczyk (19) appeared in the Dunedin District Court yesterday and admitted behaving offensively on the corner of Stanley and Ballarat Sts early on February 23.
He was fined $250, court costs $132.89.
People were socialising in the area when Stachanczyk stopped and urinated on bushes on the street corner about 1am, police prosecutor Tim Hambleton told Judge John Macdonald.
The defendant walked off along Stanley St but police who saw what he had done followed him. They arrested him soon afterwards, in Gorge Rd. He had nothing to say about his behaviour.
Duty lawyer Jo Turner said Stachanczyk and a friend had been in New Zealand, travelling around the country, for the past five months. He had had ''a heavy night'' and was affected by alcohol at the time of the offending. He could afford to pay a fine, Ms Turner said.
