A 54-year-old foreign national arrested yesterday following the sexual violation of a 29-year-old Dunedin woman was staying at the hotel where the incident took place, but the victim was not, police said.
Detective Senior Sergeant Steve McGregor, of Dunedin, said the man was charged yesterday afternoon with assault with intent to commit sexual violation.
The incident took place at the Leviathan Hotel, near Queens Gardens in Dunedin, about 8.35pm on Tuesday and police began interviewing the man that night.
The alleged offender held a dual passport, but Det Sgt McGregor declined to reveal where he came from.
The man would appear in the Dunedin District Court today, when police would seek a remand in custody.
Police inquiries were continuing.
A staff member at the Leviathan said staff there were still in shock about what had happened.
She referred any inquiries to the police.
