Man allegedly punched bus driver in head

A Dunedin man allegedly assaulted a bus driver by punching her in the head on Thursday.

Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said at 9pm police responded to a 40-year-old man who threw a bottle at a bus, smashing one of its windows.

When the bus pulled over on King Edward St, the man forced his way on board and allegedly punched the driver in the head.

He verbally abused the passengers before fleeing on foot.

Dunedin police caught up with the man and arrested him.

He appeared in the Dunedin District Court yesterday charged with assault and wilful damage, allegedly committed while he was on bail over another inner-city incident.

He opted not to apply for bail and will be back in court in a fortnight.

Dunedin Regional Council implementation lead Julian Phillips said the ORC was concerned for the driver, given the dangerous situation she faced.

"Driver safety is very important for us, however, we are unable to comment on this specific incident as the matter is before the court."
