The couple's dog, which was seen being taken from the scene while Mr Mathieson (18) lay in his car nearby unconscious with a broken leg two weeks ago, has been found.
The couple made a plea for any sightings of their beloved 18-month-old Labrador-Staffordshire terrier cross, named Missy, last week after no luck with searching, at the SPCA or with vets.
Finally, the SPCA called on Friday to say a person living nearby had seen a dog that looked like Missy wandering near where Mr Mathieson crashed on Serpentine Ave.
The couple searched the area for several hours, with no luck.
The man rang again the next day, but this time he had caught the dog.
The couple were ecstatic to see Missy after two weeks of searching, several false alarms and almost giving up hope.
"We couldn't believe it was her, and we almost didn't when we rang this man," Miss Evans (18) said.
The couple and dog were reunited shortly after, despite the couple not really believing it could be their dog after so long.
"She's lost a bit of weight, but she is really happy to be home, and so are we that she's back," Miss Evans said. "She pretty much attacked me when she saw me." The couple believe the dog was dumped back at the scene of the crash after the publicity.
Mr Mathieson said he and Miss Evans wanted to thank everyone who helped them, especially the man who caught Missy and called the SPCA, and all those who had called in with sightings and information.
"It was awesome."
