The St Clair Salt Water Pool may have had the busiest week on record.
Pool supervisor Gaye Brooks said between 700 and 800 people had visited the pool daily during the past two weeks. It had been so busy during the hot spell some staff had begun taking a splash in the pool themselves to cool off after their shifts, Mrs Brooks said.
This week might be the busiest week the pool had ever had, she said.
''People who have been coming here for decades - the regulars - say it's the busiest they've ever seen it here.
''It's just fantastic.
''The weather's been exceptional.''
For the first time in a long time, the ratepayer-funded pool could generate a noticeable profit, Mrs Brooks said.
''It's great for the finances of the pool. If we are making some money, it will certainly be put back into the pool,'' she said.
Lifeguard Karli Haugh said between Monday and Thursday this week 2591 people visited the pool.
