Lego fans and a few fanatics flocked to the Edgar Centre over the weekend for the show organised by Otago and Southland Lego enthusiast group, Lug South.
Models of some of the world’s most significant buildings, fantasy scenes, plenty of Star Wars sets and moving trains and robots were among the models that delighted people of all ages at the event.
Lug South secretary Gavin Evans (44), of Invercargill, said he was "really happy" with the turn out.
He attributed Lego’s "universal appeal" to the wide range of sets, which catered to people of varying interests.
"You can be a train enthusiast and play with Lego trains, you can be an architectural enthusiast and build massive structures."
He started buying Lego for his children when he was about 20 years old and by 25 came to the realisation he was actually buying for himself.
He was a fan of building Lego trains and took his hobby to the next level when Lord of the Rings sets came out.
Among his creations at the show was a large model of Edoras, a location from the Lord of the Rings books and movies, he spent hundreds of hours building.
"That’s my baby," he said.
About 10,000 people went to the event over the weekend and it raised about $10,000 for Dunedin Hospital’s children’s ward.
On both Saturday and Sunday the event opened an hour early, so children with disorders which made it difficult for them to be around crowds got the chance to take a look around.
Mr Evans thanked Next Rotary Generation for helping run the event and all the other organisations who had chipped in with assistance.
