Organiser Rachel Harwood said she was delighted with the Dunedin turnout, which was double last year's number and contributed to a provisional New Zealand national total of 1299.
The event helped reinforce the message "breast was best" for babies, and to ensure breast-feeding remained socially acceptable, she said.
To follow up the success of the event, Dunedin cafes would be asked to put a sticker in their window in indicating they are "breast-feeding friendly", she said.
Dunedin Hospital lactation consultant Stefanie Kalmakoff said there was a growing awareness of the benefits of breast milk for babies, and it was important mothers could feed babies when and where they needed to.
A campaign to encourage Dunedin cafes to display the breast-feeding stickers would begin in the coming months, she said.
