Slowly, but surely, landslips around Dunedin are being cleared.
The last of a six-week-old slip above Portobello Rd near Waverley was removed by Dunedin City Council contractors yesterday.
An estimated 100 tonnes of earth was cleared from private property and road reserve, having posed a risk to Portobello Rd motorists and blocked access to homes.
DCC roading maintenance engineer Peter Standring said the council would negotiate removal and repair costs with affected landowners.
The slip occurred ''right in the middle'' of June storms, which caused about $1 million worth of road-related damage in Dunedin, he said.
''Time is ticking on, and a good majority of the [roading] network is fine, it's just there are still a number of things to be fixed up.''
Traffic delays of about 10 minutes affected Portobello Rd motorists while the slip was cleared over the past two days.
Mr Standring said because the slip could only be accessed by a narrow private driveway, contractors had to ''drop'' it on to Portobello Rd then clear it away by truck.
''The best we could do was double-handle it.''
Portobello Rd was closed to one lane between 9am and 4pm accordingly.
Mr Standring said other slips around Dunedin were subject to engineering assessments and had yet to be cleared.
Some required negotiation between the council and members of the public, he said.
''We're slowly getting there.''
