Thousands of punters flocked to the sun-drenched Waikouaiti races yesterday to watch, bet and, hopefully, collect some winnings.
Barbecuing on the grassy embankment was Paul Grellet, of Dunedin, who "was up" after four races, largely thanks to backing the winner of race three.
While food was his priority early in the afternoon, others opted for liberal doses of sunscreen and alcohol.
Before each race, queues at the tote were at least a dozen deep, with one form-guide holding toddler overheard telling his father to back "the blue one".
Children, when not influencing their parents' betting decisions, were entertained by pony rides, carnival rides, and entertainment, including Dunedin magician Jonathan Usher, who delighted a large crowd by swallowing a 1m-long balloon.
A heavy police presence was visible to those entering and leaving the town, with announcements on the grounds' speakers reminding race-goers not to drink and drive.
