Korean War veterans, their families and members of the Korean community gathered in Dunedin on Saturday to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the end of the Korean War.

Republic of Korea ambassador Yongkyu Park said there were 45 fatalities from the 6000 New Zealand soldiers who served in the Korean War.

''The Korean Government and people are very grateful.

''The Korean Veterans Association and Korean community hosted a lunch of Korean fare for about 60 people, including eight New Zealand servicemen from the Korean War ''as an expression of our appreciation'', Mr Park said.

The eight veterans were aged between 76 and 86 and lived in Otago but were ''mostly Dunedin blokes'', Mr Elliott said.
