Emergency services staff attend to a KiwiRail worker whose toe was nearly severed after his leg was caught in the coupling between a locomotive and a wagon in a shunting accident at Port Chalmers about 6.30pm yesterday.

The man was initially treated by Fire and Emergency New Zealand staff before being transferred to Dunedin Hospital by ambulance.

"The incident will be investigated," KiwRail zero harm manager Katie McMahon said last night.
