Kiwi Regional Air back flying to Queenstown today

Fans of Fleetwood Mac will be able to take a return flight to Queenstown today, despite the cancellation of the service yesterday, Kiwi Regional Air says.

The start-up airline's Dunedin to Queenstown service usually runs only on Monday and Fridays, after midweek runs were cancelled due to low demand, but it retained today's and yesterday's flights for Fleetwood Mac fans.

However, yesterday's service was cancelled due to high winds.

Kiwi Regional Air (KRA) chief executive Ewan Wilson said as long as weather conditions were favourable, the service would run this morning as scheduled.

Five passengers destined for Queenstown and 10 who were taking the return flight from Queenstown, including some planning to attend last night's Fleetwood Mac concert, had to make alternative travel arrangements after the service was cancelled about 7am yesterday.

Mr Wilson said those wishing to travel were offered a shuttle service and those who did not wish to take up the offer were given refunds.

Wind speeds of 55 knots buffeted the route and were above KRA's operational parameters of 50 knots, leading the airline to ''appropriately cancel'' the flights.

KRA made the decision to cancel mid-week flights on the service after its inaugural flight on October 27.

The decision to cancel yesterday's flights had nothing to do with low passenger numbers, Mr Wilson said.

''Let me absolutely assure you that passenger numbers played no role in my operational team's decision,'' he said.

''I can show on multiple occasions where we have run flights with considerably less passengers.

''The decision today was purely based on safety and the high winds.''

KRA's Dunedin to Nelson service ran as scheduled yesterday.
