Kings High School has joined the growing number of schools in Dunedin which are installing security cameras to help prevent costly vandalism.
The South Dunedin secondary school recently followed the lead of John McGlashan and Taieri Colleges by installing security cameras.
Kings High School principal Dan Reddiex said it was "a sad indictment on society" that schools needed to install security systems to help protect them from damage.
"It's unfortunate. It's due to only a small portion of society that we are having to take this measure."
Mr Reddiex said the school had a spate of vandalism during a three-week period recently, which inspired the board of trustees to install a $2000 security camera system.
He declined to say how much money had been spent on repairing vandalism during the past 12 months and would not reveal how many cameras were installed or where they were installed on school grounds.
"It's not a major problem, but with all the financial problems the way they are and funding being at a premium, the security camera system is worth the money.
"We would rather see money that is spent fixing vandalism channelled towards boys' education."
