A colder winter resulting in higher electricity bills has increased demand for food from the Mosgiel Community Foodbank.

Foodbank co-ordinator Michelle Kerr said there had been an increase in superannuitants requesting food.

''Superannuitants can't make the money go as far as they used to,'' Mrs Kerr said.

''It's been so cold this winter, it's had an impact on what people are paying in electricity.''

About 55 food parcels were handed out every month but the biggest demand was for spaghetti, tomatoes, soup and fresh fruit and vegetables.

Mrs Kerr lauded the generosity of the Mosgiel community.

''Without our community we couldn't do [it].

''Our churches are always bringing food.

''We have a lot of people who grow extra veges for our food bank.

''That's what our community is all about,'' she said.

However, it was not just people who gave food donations that provided goodwill; often people using the foodbank gave something in return.

People gave things like artwork and preserves in exchange for food, Mrs Kerr said.
