Kaikorai pupils win top award

The enterprising spirit of Dunedin's youth shone through at the Young Enterprise Scheme presentation in Wellington last night.

A group of seven year 12 Kaikorai Valley College pupils, in a team called Namcap NZ, won the Todd Corporation Award for Young Enterprises, which was presented by Governor-General Sir Anand Satyanand.

The award recognised their work developing The Colourful Dunedin Book, a colouring-in book featuring the city's family attractions and discount coupons for visits, college teacher Peter Dodds said.

It also placed them second out of 21 school teams - each of them regional finalists - at last night's event, and the 650 teams from around New Zealand that entered this year's event, he said.

"It's a fantastic day; the kids did extremely well," he said.

The Columba College team, Lucrative, won the Ministry of Youth Development award for excellence in commitment, presented by Social Development Minister Paula Bennett.

Columba head of commerce Suzanne Bishop also received the 2009 Sir James Fletcher Award after 20 years' teaching economics and enterprise - 18 of them at the college.
