Among the fine china and train sets, a whale's jawbone propped up in the corner of Haywards Auction House is a rather large and rare sight.

The jawbone, one rib and four vertebrae will go under the hammer tomorrow, along with about 1100 other antique and collectable items.

The bones were bought in Blenheim about six months ago by a Dunedin seller, and auctioneer Kevin Hayward expected them to sell for between $500 and $1000.

The jawbone from an unknown "big" whale weighed about 60kg and had received some interest, he said.

He had never sold anything like it and believed it would be suitable for either a bone carver or a garden sculpture, due to its weathered nature.

The bones were not considered artefacts of historical importance due to their age and state so did not require registration or restrictions to be placed on their sale or movement, Mr Hayward said.
