She taught singers and singing teachers from throughout Otago and Southland during a workshop held in St Clair at the weekend.
The founding president of the New Zealand Association of Teachers of Singing gave tips on how to teach singing with proper English diction as well as advice about controlling the tongue while holding a note.
"When you hum, your tongue is in the acoustic-at-rest posture, as if it were resting, and it's good for sound. Acoustic is everything and it is the tongue that destroys a lot of really good singing," she said.
About 50 people registered for the Saturday workshop, which started at 9.30am and included a master class before finishing about 5pm.
The association is in its 25th year.
Committee member Judy Bellingham, who teaches singing at the University of Otago, was at the workshop.
She said it was the first time the association's founder had taken a singing workshop for members in Dunedin.
Recreational singers keen to improve their style were also able to register.
