Slip, slop and slapping are Isabelle Northey, 2, who applied sun block to Chloe Beckinsale’s, 7, back at Brighton Beach, south of Dunedin, on Saturday.

Temperatures reached 18°C in Dunedin city, making it the 85th-warmest of the places MetService gets readings from around the country.

The South’s inland area was a different story — Alexandra was the warmest place in the country on Saturday, reaching 31.8°C at the airport, followed by Twizel where it reached 31.3°C, then Tara Hills, near Omarama, with 31°C and Wānaka Aerodrome fourth on 30.3°C.

In contrast, Invercargill and Gore were respectively the fourth and fifth-wettest spots in the country on Saturday. Showers around the South are forecast to clear to fine over Westland and Fiordland this afternoon and become isolated elsewhere.
