A police presence remained yesterday at the site of a South Dunedin house fire which killed two people this week.

A section of Wesley St was again cordoned off as police remained on the scene.

Detective Inspector Steve Wood said postmortems began yesterday and would continue today to identify the bodies.

They were removed from the house on Tuesday.

Police would not answer detailed questions asked about the investigation yesterday.

The fire occurred in the back flat of the property early on Monday.

Police and fire investigators, with assistance from forensic specialists, were continuing the scene examination, Det Insp Wood said.

The names of those who had died would not be released until formal identification had been completed, he said.

''Police are grateful for the information received from the public so far, and would still like to hear from anyone else who may have seen or heard something which could assist our investigation.''

The Otago Daily Times understands the deceased are a male and a female.

Dunedin police (03) 471 4800; Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.
