Inquiry after police car crashes into parked vehicles

A police car crashed into three parked cars while being driven during the treacherous conditions that caused chaos on Dunedin roads earlier this week.

A police spokeswoman confirmed a police car was involved in a "low-speed non-injury collision" with three unoccupied vehicles on Warrender St about 9pm on Monday.

Inquiries were being carried out to determine to what extent inclement weather contributed to the crash and if there were any additional factors at play.

"All cars have access to chains, are fully equipped with safety equipment and our people receive regular driver training," the spokeswoman said.

At times the weather did impact the ability of staff to travel to work safely but there were contingencies in place to maintain service delivery, she said.

On Monday, staffing levels were maintained despite the blizzard-like conditions, though some calls had to be prioritised over others owing to the weather.

‘‘We are able to and will respond to all emergency situations,’’ the spokeswoman said.
