Road safety improvements at the intersection of State Highway 1 and Riccarton Rd East should reduce the area's crash rate, the New Zealand Transport Agency says.
Since 2006 there have been 12 reported crashes within 100m of the intersection, including four which involved minor injuries.
The NZTA plans to relocate a post box, which restricts visibility for motorists turning right from Riccarton Rd East.
An NZTA spokesman said although none of the crashes could be directly attributed to sight restriction, the repositioning of the post box was a necessary safety improvement. It will be moved beside a power pole between numbers 69 and 71 Riccarton Rd East.
NZTA will reinstate the footpath at the intersection and install a handrail there, for additional pedestrian safety.
It will establish two-hour parking, between 9am and 5pm, across the road from the East Taieri Dairy, and address any highway maintenance issues in the vicinity.
Anyone wanting to make a submission on the proposed work can write to Marcos Santana at the NZTA, or emailing him (marcos.santana@nzta.govt.nz).
