Senior Station Officer Peter Douglas said about four fire appliances, and 16 Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) staff attended the scene about 2am.
SSO Douglas said the owner of the house was woken by the smoke alarms, and was able to exit before flames engulfed the place.
Fenz officers were at the scene until 6am, and the fire took about 40 minutes to get under control.
SSO Douglas said the fire was "not suspicious", and the cause was still being determined.
However, a "charging device" short-circuiting was one possible cause.
"This is a reminder for people to be alert when charging electrical equipment such as laptops."
If it were not for the smoke detectors, the outcome could have been much worse.
"While a lot of the house has been affected by the fire, some of it is salvageable, and the person was able to escape."
